The Sheet Metal Local #83 Apprenticeship Program is looking for qualified applicants to earn while you learn a career in the Sheet Metal Industry. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED. with a passing grade in algebra, math I or at least a 47 on the GED math test, provide transcripts of grades, have lived within our Local’s geographic jurisdiction for at least 6 months prior to applying, have a valid NYS. Drivers License and reliable transportation, and submit to a drug screening at our expense. You must also have the desire and aptitude to listen, learn and work with your hands and mind. Applications may be completed, in person with drivers’ license, on Mondays (excluding holidays) from 8:00am until noon and 12:30pm until 4:00pm. Applicants will be scheduled for the NYS Department of Labor BOLT reading and math tests and an oral interview.

A Union Sheet Metal Worker is one of the finest trained Craftsmen of all the building trades. They fabricate, install and service architectural sheet metal, kitchen equipment, and ductwork/equipment for heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in residential and commercial buildings. They also work with many materials including galvanized, copper, aluminum, brass and a wide variety of specialty materials.

Sheet Metal Local #83 Apprentices work during the day for a Union Contractor and attend classes in the evening for a period of five years. An apprentice receives a minimum of 8,000 hours on the job training and 940 hours of classroom training, in one of the finest training centers in the country. An apprentice starts at $17.28 per hour + benefits and receives periodic raises throughout their apprenticeship. Currently Sheet Metal Local #83 Journeymen receive $32.30 per hour + benefits. There is no cost to the apprentice for training. Apprentices are required to purchase their own hand tools and make a $100.00 book and supplies deposit.

The Training Center is a state of the art facility, which trains the apprentices and journeymen of Local #83. The Center is equipped with Computers for CAD drawing, sheet metal fabrication equipment, drafting and welding (GMAW, SMAW, GTAW, Plasma and Orbital). The Center is also equipped with a full Service and Testing and Air Balance Training Lab. The Training Center is accredited through the International Training Institute and an AWS accredited weld testing facility.
