Training Opportunities

We provide an extensive offering of training programs to members to update and enhance their skill sets throughout their career. All training for journeymen and apprentice members of Local 83 is provided free of charge. Sheet metal apprenticeship training provides a chance to earn money while learning, as well as job security, greater earning potential, opportunities for advancement, and greater job satisfaction.

Just getting started in sheet metal work? No problem. Download and submit our application to join the team. All applications must be hand-delivered to either the union office at 900 Commerce Drive, Clifton Park, NY, during normal business hours.

Apprenticeship Application

Filling out your application is just the first step in the application process. As an applicant, you will be required to meet the particular requirements of the Apprenticeship Standards of the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of the Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 83 and approved by the New York State Department of Labor.

The following are the minimum requirements of the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). This must include a passing grade in Algebra, a passing grade in Math I, or a minimum of a 47 on the math portion of the GED or minimum of 500 on the TASC math test. Proof will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must sign an affidavit statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work required.  Which includes:
    • Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to noise and respiratory irritants.
    • Prolonged standing and walking.
    • Repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
    • Working in restrictive or confined spaces.
    • Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment, including tools. (50 – 75 pounds)
    • Working off of ladders and scaffolds at various heights.
  • Must have a valid New York State driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to drive company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and required apprentice classes at the approved school.
  • Must submit to a drug test, at the committee’s expense, if selected for the program.
  • Must submit to a background check at the sponsor’s expense, if selected for the program.
  • Must take the Criteria Corp-Criteria Basic Skills Test (CBST) and Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test (CCAT) tests. Applicants must score above 6 on the combined CBST/CCAT to be considered for the program.

State law states sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.

Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.

Prior to your interview, you will be required to come to our facility to complete a self evaluation form, sign the physical affidavit and supply a copy of your NYS Drivers License. Your interview will not be scheduled until this is completed.

  • A copy of your *High School Transcripts or GED Certificate with scores. You may also provide copies of college transcripts or trade school certificates for classes attended.
    • We are not requesting a copy of your high school diploma.

FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS ARE A PART OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS.

Each of the three parts are graded.

The three parts are: 

  1. Application
  2. Act Test
  3. Personal Interview

TRAINING COURSES

There are two options for those who need to take a class to qualify for SASMI:

  1. Select a class currently being offered at the local training center. If no classes are being offered within the dates you need, go to option 2.
  2. Click on the ITI link below and go to Training then On Line classes and choose a class being offered there.

Certifications in accordance with AWS QC7 Supplement C (AWS D9.1) require maintenance every 12 months.

Certifications in accordance with AWS QC7 Supplement G or F (All others) require maintenance every 6 months.
